Backup restore won't work with external harddrive

I'm trying to back up my laptop using the Windows Vista Backup and Restore utility, and backing up to an external harddrive (Western Digital MyBook). When I try to run the backup, it immediately fails, and says there is a corrupt file system on the external drive. However, when I run checkdisk on the external drive, it says there are no problems. Any advice? It's very much appreciated!
