Error 80070490 Could not search for updates

Hi,
I have Vista Home Premium SP1 on a Dell laptop. Updates have worked fine for the last 3 years. Suddenly 9 days ago it refuses to check for updates and returns the error code 80070490 and says it "could not search for new updates". Can anyone help me? I've looked all over and have found a few references to this problem but no solutions. Thanks.
