vista x64 ultimate won't install drivers for my docuprint c2090fs printer

Hi All
I'm having a nightmare trying to get my laptop (HP pavillion dv9000) to accept the x64 drivers for my printer (fuji xerox c2090fs)
I have tried letting the system install the drivers itself, installing the drivers using Fuji Xerox's own installer, using the add a printer link in the printers folder and updating the driver within device manager. All to no avail!
The laptop 'sees' the printer in device manager under 'other devices' and it installs the fax & scan elements of the driver package (the fax commands appear to work & the scanner is funtional too) but I cannot convince it to let me have the printer function.
The only clue I have is the error message 'Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it'
web searches have proved fruitless for trying to find an answer to this - please help
