Windows won't recognize USB ext hard drive
I have a WD 500 GB My Book Essential USB hard drive and also a WD 1 TB My Book Essential USB hard drive that I have used to back-up my Win Vista Ultimate computer. Yesterday, when I plugged the 500 GB drive in it took a long time for the USB device to notify me that it had installed the drives and the device was ready for use, but it did. However, I can't see the drive in My Computer. When I go to Drive Manager, it tells me the drive needs to be initialized but when I tell it to initialize the drive I get the error message "Incorrect Function" and it won't do anything. I then plugged in the 1 TB drive and the same thing happened. I then tried plugging the drives into a different computer that runs Win XP SP3, and again the USB device told me it had loaded the drivers and the device was ready to use, but the drive doesn't show up under My Computer. When I go to Drive Manager on the XP computer, it doesn't show the drive either--that is true for both the 500 GB and 1TB drive. When I click on the safely remove hardware, and then properties it shows 2 things--"USB Mass Storage Device" and "WD". I tried updating the driver but Windows (Vista or XP) tells me I have the most up to date driver. Both drives have worked fine in the past on the Vista machine. I tried disabling the 1394 device on the XP maching based on a post I found on another forum but that didn't do anything. Ideas?
