Windows Mail not opening attchments

For some reason as of 4 days ago I cannot open or save any attachments in windows mail.

I have been plugging through forums and tried everything I found including removing IE8, getting all the latest updates including SP2, running as an administrator, changing the "start in" entry in the properties, trying windows live mail, restoring to an earlier date etc etc etc. All to no avail.

Clicking on the attachment does nothing with no message, trying to save gives me this message "There was an error saving one or more attachments check your disk space. I got plenty of disk space.

Toshiba X-200, 2.0 core 2 duo, 3 G ram, Windows Ultimate, 320 G HD

I'm stumped. Any ideas?
