notification area

the notification are is greyed out with the exception of the clock how do I get the volume and power icons back

Left click on Start > right click any blank space in the left portion of the window that opens. Select "Properties" > Select "Notification Area". Place a check mark in any unchecked spaces that you wish to show in the "Notification Area". Also uncheck "Hide inactive icons" and select any that you wish to show by selecting them in "Customize." Re-check "Hide inactive icons" > click "Apply" and "OK".
