Windows Updates for 64bit

I have been trying to install the windows updates for vista ultimate 64bit and for the last 2 months have had no luck. With each attempt it tells me that that attempt to update has failed. can someone tell me how to resolve this problem? I have made manual attempts from the MS website to no avail.
