i can't change file names on windows vista ultimate

i'm logged in as the administrator but when i try to change a file name, when i click eneter after i've typed in what i want the file to be called it says the file does not exist. i've gone on to propeties of the file and unticked the read only box, but that seems to re-tick itself? i've also ticked the box for apply to all file and sub folders within this folder. it happens with all my folders aswell.
if anyone could help me with this problem it would be very much appreciated,
