Freeze on incomplete boot-up
Currently trying to resolve an issue with my dad's Dell Inspiron laptop running Vista home premium at latest SP; 2GB memory (which I have taken out and cleaned and re-seated).
Will boot up but gets as far as trying to load windows sidebar more often than not, ie loads the wallpaper and all desktop icons/shortcuts. Can click on any desktop shortcut but nothing happens then. Ditto on the "start here" circle lower left on taskbar. Have tried running startup repair but it reports that no issues were found. Even using to revert to previous config does not solve the issue; the only thing to do is long press the on/off button to turn the laptop off.
However if you boot up in safe mode, even with networking, it runs just fine. The issue is not related to a new software instal or any other "notable event", it just came on suddenly.
Short of attempting a full re-install from the partition on the hard drive, can anyone help please?
