Vista Home Premium Won't Recognize Disks

My HP9612ca laptop stopped recognizing DVDs and CDs on my DVD RW drive. I have removed and reloaded the driver, tried system restore and ran a driver program and it did not show anything missing from the CD Drive. The light comes on when I insert a disk and the drive whirrs but then it stops. This is the same for all disks.
The icon shows up in My Computer and when I double click it the disk ejects and says "please insert a disk into..."
This drive worked fine before, so I suspect it is a software conflict of some kind.
Any suggestions???
