"System Restore did not complete successfully."

I am new to this forum so please forgive any mistakes.
I need to restore my Vista Home Premium to a point aboy 2 weeks ago. However, although the restore points appear to have been created regularly, when I attempt to restore from any of them, the restore fails. It appears to go through the correct process includin re-booting, but eventually, after the re-boot, a window from System Restore appears saying:
"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occured during System Restore."
I am not a complete novice but any help would be appreciated.
