I have no idea what might be wrong...
So, I come home from a 4 day business trip, to have my wife tell me that my desktop died while she was on the internet. Her details of how and what had happened are sketchy at best, but here's what I have found so far:

-It will boot, and bring up the desktop and everything looks normal. You can select and open as you should, but for only a few seconds and then all it will do is give me the little vista circle. (hourglass, thinking curser, etc) I can't do anything with it then and am forced to power it off and try again. (one time I got a runtime error 216 at 0040433a)
-Safe mode does the same thing, the only difference is that I get a few extra seconds to try and open something. Sometimes in safe mode, when I try to open something, I get an error;
"External Exception c000006"
-If I let it sit for a while on the normal desktop, I will eventually get a BSOD. Sometimes the tech info changes a bit, but for example, last time, it read; *** STOP: 0X000000F4 (0X0000000000000003, 0XFFFFFA800868D568, 0XFFFFF80002B4C530)

(-Possibly related, possibly not, I have noticed that when I start up normally, once things start to load, I do notice that Windows Defender icon is in the tray and has an exclamation point over it?)

I'm good with a lot of things, but diagnosing windows and the such, I am not. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do or what has happened? I have a recovery disk from when I purchased it, but I have a lot of my graphics on here and can't afford to loose any of them. (I know... I should have backed things up...I swear i'm gonna start doing it regularly once I get back up and running :P ) Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
