error 80070017 during backup

hi there, for the past 2 days i have been trying to backup my files using windows vista backup. i keep getting data error (cyclic redundancy check) 0x80070017. can someone please explain what this is? how to fix? i would like to do a backup. I have never done a full backup before on this computor. thanks
