Problem with iTunes in Vista
Hi,

I am having a problem with itunes in Vista. here is the scenario;

I hvae two user partitions on my laptop. One iTunes works fine and the second I can't get past the license agreement screen. So I know it's not an itunes problem.

When I start iTunes on my Admin id it comes up with the license agreement screen where you either click on Agree or Decline. When i try to click it does nothing but give me the alert tone as if I am doing something wrong. There is no way past this other than to start task manager and end iTunes in the applications list.

This only appears to be a problem with iTunes and no other software. Previous to installing version 8 of iTunes I had problems whenever iTunes would use a pop up screen e.g. when it prompted for a password to enter ITunes store. same thing would happen. It would not let me enter a password or click on any of the buttons and I had to end iTunes from task manager.

Any thoughts on where to start looking?

thanks

David W

An update. I started Vista in Safe Mode and tried to start iTunes. It started and let me respond to the License Agreement no problems there. When I go back and start Vista normally it now starts but whenever a popup screen comes up it hangs completely and only way to close it is by doing an End Task in Taskmgr.

Any ideas where to start looking for what is causing this or trouble shooting tips? It is obviously something that doesn't start in safe mode but does in a normal startup, but how do i isolate it?

thanks

i think you should first uninstall the itunes and try to install it again, or plug in your ipod and usually itunes detects it and starts it self

Hi Vivian

thanks for the reply. I backed out of iTunes 8 and it seems to be working again with 7.7. However something failed when I started it and I didn't catch the error but I have taken a snapshot of what is running in task manager and services so if it starts having the problem again I can see what else is running.

Thanks again

David

O.k. The problem is back. So it is something that starts that affects iTunes. Itunes works in Safe Mode. So what is the easiest way to work out what it is?

remove everything from startup one by one and see if iTunes works, or is there another way?

thanks

David

I think I found the culprit - Foxytunes - The Firefox add on that let's you control iTunes etc. I removed it from Firefox and hey presto iTunes now works properly!

One to keep in mind!

Re: Problem with iTunes in Vista
Hi,

I thought this may be relevant to this post, regarding itunes & vista.

I had terrible issues with itunes version 8 and vista.. BSD etc..

Then I came across a post (in another forum) about a itunes seamless installer, which basically takes out most of the "junk" itunes bundles in. (I personally dislike itunes, but I have a ipod touch 2nd gen and don't have much of a choice!)

The seamless installer worked a treat for me and my vista without any problems and still works great. I aint no techy, but it may be worth a try for many having issues with compatability etc..

The seamless installer removes the bonjour service and other unnecessary stuff, you dont really need, that apple throw in.

Modifications: No Bonjour service, no iTunesHelper or iPodService at startup and no MobileMe support.

Anyway, here is the link and hope it helps others who may have the same problems I had.

The link:
iTunes 8.0.0.35 Switchless Installers

Hope it helps.. and hello to all.. my first post.
Ged

Hello Dave,
Pretty solid trouble-shooting skills you have demonstrated.
I suggest that you get: Process Explorer from Sysinternals and drill down until you find the service and related dll's etc..
It will make for a nice challenge.

Re: Problem with iTunes in Vista
Hi defritj,

thanks for the reply and the info. I have run Process Explorer and have found what is causing the problem. It is Digital Persona, the fingerprint reader software that came with the laptop. Once I closed all processes realated to it iTunes shop works no problems.

The challenge now is to see if I can get both working at once.....

Thanks Again

Dave.
