Vista Update Hangs

Hi All.

I've had this problem for a few weeks now but have been unable to find an answer. Everytime I try to use the Vista upgrade program it hangs i.e. all I get is the pop up control panel aplet and the hour glass (or whatever that new blue circle is called). No error messages at all,; I eventually have to use task manager to shut it down. Any attempts to try to access upgrade produce the same result. Also, attempts to update Defender end up with "Searching For Definitions" but nothing else happens. I'm using Zonealarm Security Suite, but have disabled that to no effect. Tried running it from "Safe Mode With Networking" but no effect. I'm using a Dell C521. Any ideas greatfully received.
