cd/dvd rom gone in Vista

Several days ago I discovered that the cd/dvd rom icon was gone, when I put in a boot disk it won't start. I have tried the microsoft thing about deleting the filters in the registry and restarting with no luck, I have tried a different drive and cables with no luck. I am at wit's end here, I have done a restore and deleted any programs that I have downloaded between the time I last used the drive and the date when I found the drive missing. There is power to the drive as it does open and close but thats it. It doesn't appear in device manager or really anywhere else. When you do the regedit thing now and go through all the steps it doesn't show any filters. It also doesn't show anything when you do a hardware search. Any one have any ideas on this problem? Go into your bios and verify that the devices are not turned off or disabled. That sounds like a good place to start.
