Clean install of Home Premium over Ultimate on an HP
I purchased a HP Pavilion laptop in an auction. I knew it had Vista Ultimate OEM installed but did not realise it was 64 bit. Now of course some of my legacy apps will not run on 64 bit (they specifically say this and do not have 64 bit versions).
I have purchased Home Premium and plan to do a clean install and delete Ultimate.
I have asked HP the following:
Is there anything special about HP Pavilion I should know before I do this?
What is the HP_RECOVERY (D partition for and do I need to re-instate it in the install (I don't think so as I can use Vista or other recovery options)?
HP have not replied (about a week) so I am talking to you guys.
Also do you know of a detailed walkthrough or tutorial I can look at before I launch into this? Those I have found basically say "follow the prompts". I have not done something as ambitious as this and replaced the op system before, I have only ever moved up through the years with new PCs.
I realise I will have to re-install my apps.
The laptop in networked with my desktop (Home Premium) to share printer and Public folders.
Thanks.

Well, Home Premium isn't bad and unless you do some more advanced stuff on it, there's not a lot of difference.

That "HP_RECOVERY" partition will be a partition that you can't access which contains the necessary files to restore your computer to it's original state. (how it was striaight out of the box)

Most new PCs come with them. I know my Packard Bell computer that I'm sitting at now has one and it has proved to be quite useful.

Thanks, installed now.
I have now successfully replaced Ultimate 64 bit with Home premium 32 bit and my legacy apps now work. I have not done such an ambitious system change before. I reformatted the C drive and simple left the D drive alone (only 10GB anyway). Thanks.
