Windows Update Error 8024402C
LAN setting is correct (automatically detect settings). Not running Windows firewall. Using System Suite 8. When clicking on Windows Update, firewall pop up window does not appear as it once did, so I can allow access. Windows Update settings are "check for updates....but let me choose" however, no matter what the setting, error 8024402C always occurs.

Hi Vistamire,

this sounds like a Firewall related problem indeed.

See http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a29271033.mspx

One thing to try would be to turn off your firewall and try and get the updates. Reboot your PC beforehand just in case some crashed application is causing the firewall to not respond.

regards

Steve

Hi Vistamire,

it looks like the problem is that something is stopping Vista from reaching the Windows Update site.

Lets check your HOSTS file and make sure it is clean and there are no bogus entries for any windows update sites.
Check out this link Changing your hosts file in Vista and tell me what the contents of your HOSTS file is.

The next thing to try is check your PC for Malware as some malware try to stop the PC from getting updated. Try one of the many online scanners and see if they show up anything.

10 Online Virus & Malware Scanners

let us know how you get on,

Scanned thoroughly with 2 different programs. No spyware, malware, viruses, etc.

Checked hosts file. Had been modified by System Mechanic. Changed to what was recommended on the Tim Hibbard site.

Re-ran Windows update.

Still getting error 8024402C.

Hi Vistamire,

can you try another update and after it fails can you post the corresponding lines from the WindowsUpdate.log file.

Also you could try the following to remove the current Update files in case they are corrupt. When removed and an update is done the files are redownloaded...

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box type net stop wuauserv and click OK.

4. Then again click on Start - Run.

5. In the Run box, type %windir% and then click OK.

6. This will open the Windows or Winnt folder or your system. Locate the folder named SoftwareDistribution

7. Right click on this folder and then select Rename. Type the new name as OLDSoftwareDistribution

8. Now close this window.

9. Again click on Start Run and type net start wuauserv and then press OK.

10. Restart your system.

11. Retry the Update

and similiarly you need to type "net start wuauserv" ( without the quotation marks ("))

Hi Vistamire,

I found some info today that fixed another persons 8024402C problem...

1) BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Agent); Automatic Updates and Cryptographic Services *MUST* be enabled (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services). **You can turn them OFF and disable later if you so desire.

2) Go to "Tools, Interent Options, Privacy, Pop-Up Blocker, Settings...and made sure the following are added:

*.microsoft.com
*.download.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com

3) Go to TCP-IP Properties, Advanced, DNS, and made sure all defaults are chosen. (Append Primary & Suffix radio button is checked, everything else is blank) This assumes you are receiving a DHCP address. Unplug & Plug your Network cable back out & in, so it gets a new DNS suffix with the DHCP address.

See how it goes. Sure to hit a home run at some stage..huh...

regards

Steve
