Conflicting network connections
Since installing my new modem supplied by my service provider, when my computer restarts there are two active internet connections even though I only have one network adapter. (note: I am not connected wirelessly although my modem/router does support this) The two connections conflict and do not allow me to access the internet. If I click on the merge and delete option for either one of these connections, only one connection is showing in the connections list (lets call it connection A) and it cannot be deleted because it is "in use." If I disable one connection they both become inactive and disappear from the Windows Vista network and Sharing centre. If I then enable my network adapter only connection A restores itself and I am able to access the internet. I have to do this every time I restart my computer.

I also tried uninstalling my network adapter through Device Manager. Vista uninstalls the adapter, then automatically detects "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Once it's reinstalled only conneciton A is active, but again, if i restart my machine I'm back to having two conflicting connections.

Any advice would be helpful.
Greg

Hi gmc,

sorry for not getting back to you earlier.
I am just back from http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/pho.../index.php?n=7

can you do the following for me.

1. Open a command prompt
2. Type ipconfig /all > c:\ipall.txt
3. You can either copy and paste the contents of the text file created on your hard drive in a posting or you can email the text file.

regards

Steve

Cool pic Steve. Hopefully the weather was good for you.

Okay, apparently nothing about this is going to be easy. When I type in the ipconfig command as you've specified I get "Access denied." My user account is the only one on this PC and it's an administrator account, so I'm not sure why I'm getting that message.

Hi Greg,

try this....

Click on Start, go to Programs -> Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. You’ll be prompted to approve the action.

The command prompt will always run as a standard user even though you are an administrator,

regards

Greg,
thanks for the email. The second "Network Connection" seems to be IPv6 related so lets turn off IPv6 ( unless you really need it???)

To disable IPv6 try the following.... In the Connections and Adapters folder, obtain properties on all of your connections and adapters and clear the check box next to the Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) component in the list under "This connection uses the following items".

Lets see how this goes,

regards

Steve

Okay, so I went into Manage Network Connections. There was only one adapter listed. I went into the properties and disabled TCP/IPv6. I restarted my computer.

Same situation. Two connections became active which blocked my access to the internet. I checked the properties and confirmed that IPv6 was disabled. Only one adapter is listed. It says "Local Area Connection" and then underneath it, it has listed "Network A, Unidentified Network."

I had to uninstall and then re-install my network adapter as described previously to access the net.

Steve,
I just sent you an updated version of the file and I noticed that the contents indicate that IPv6 is enabled. I went back and checked my connection again and IPv6 boxed is checked. Could that be as a result of unistalling and reinstalling my network adapter so that I could access the internet? I have a connection right now, but if I restart my machine I won't.

Steve,
The other two copies of the ip file were when my connection had been restored. I just sent you a copy of what the file looks like when I'm experiencing the conflict.

Hi Greg,

ipall2.txt shows the problem all right and it may have nothing to do with Vista.

It looks like the modem is passing the address 0.0.0.0 to Vista as the Default Gateway which means that any network related traffic is being sent to 0.0.0.0 to get out on to a Local Network or the Internet. It should show 192.168.2.1 which is the address of your Modem.

The way to forward with this is to ring your ISP and tell them that you are using Vista and that the modem they sent out is setting 0.0.0.0 as the default gateway and you cannot connect to the Internet.

What is the Make and Model of your new Modem?

Can you get to the configuration page of the modem by going to http://192.168.2.1 in your browser ( when you can connect to the Internet ) and then there should be a reading saying what the Firmware version is. Can you tell me what it is.

regards

Steve
