How to change icons/thumbs?

Is there some trick or secret to making thumbs and icons match the programs they're associated with? I have two programs (Irfanview and PolyEdit Lite) that allow you to set custom icons for files created with them, but neither one of them works. I can change it to a new icon, but Vista keeps right on creating whatever thumb or icon it feels like.

I've tried deleting the thumb cache and icon cache and starting all over but that didn't help. Vista has always seemed to have a mind of it's own when it comes to icon creation. Is there something I'm missing? How can I get more control of what icons are created?

It was a bitch but I finally figured out PolyEdit Lite. I had to do a clean install and then pick an icon I wanted to use, then associate the file types with the program and then they changed. This sucks, you think they would have figured out an easier way by now.
