How do you stop it from restarting automactically.

My computer (Vista Home Basic) will restart right in the middle of using another program. It is configuring updates. No warning. If I've been working on something and did not save it, it is gone. Please help. I don't mind being nagged about needing an update, but Vista please don't force me to lose my work. What can I do?
