Disk usage gauge fluctuates wildly

I have Vista Home Basic on a Toshiba L305-S5919 notebook. It's about eight months old. Recently I've noticed the hard disk usage gauge going up and down for no apparent reason. It fluctuates between 90 and 106 GB free. The graphic actually changes accordingly. I noticed it first with the Hard Disk Drive meter in My Computer (both the bar graph and also the pie chart in Properties), then again in the Piriform Defraggler pie chart so it seems to be effecting my whole system.

I tried to find information about this online but couldn't find any about this specific issue. It wouldn't really bother me but it keeps going back and forth for no apparent reason. Anyone know if this is a known problem in Vista or what to do about it?
