Windows can't find any backup sets

I used the backup and restore system to backup all the documents on my Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Basic. I backed up the documents to an external hard drive. Three days later, my laptop crashed and went into Restore mode, restoring my computer to "factory settings." Now I want to restore from that backup I made three days ago, but when I go to the Backup and Restore Center/Advanced Backups/ E:WBook, I get an error message saying Windows doesn't find any backup sets. When I got to the hard disk itself, there are the backup sets, labeled exactly as the Backup and Restore Center named them. There are several hundred zipped files in there. But no way to get at them. Help!

This would be find except that, as I said in the original query, "Windows can't find any backup sets." I am staring at a file on my external hard drive saying "Backup set [date]" but I am unable to get from Restore Files from Another Computer to Select Files because Backup and Restore doesn't SEE those files. I copied them to my desktop, thinking that might work. Nope.

Any other suggestions?
