Vista and Dialup Connection Status Notification

I recently bought a new laptop that has Vista. Previously I had been using XP. With XP, when I made an internet connection using dialup, a popup notification would appear briefly in the taskbar showing the status and connection speed. Vista hasn't been doing this. I've tried everything I know of but can't get it to show the notification. Anyone know any tips or secrets to get Vista to show the notification? I know all I have to do is click the dialup icon, but I'm used to the convenience of the automatic notification and was hoping to replicate it with Vista.
