cannot start vista, password is equired, please help !

Hi Guys !
My name is Hanna, I am new to this forum.I have very limited knowledge or experience with computers, please do excuse my ignorance, I hope you guys can help !
I use Toshiba laptop with Vista home edition. I am the only person logged in, however my kids play with this computer at times. last time when I started my computer, It did not even boot, it showed me the "Phoenix" writing, not even started windows when I was asked for a password(???),I have never set one and I have no clue which password to type in ! there is no way I could bypass it including the recovery disc that came with my computer.it wont boot as it keeps asking for a password immediately.
I have TONS of work on this machine I just cannot afford to lose, please help !!
