Problems with Sidebar gadgets accessing computer

Hello,

I have a couple of sidebar gadgets that require information from the computer that don't seem to be working. In particular, one is trying to show the wireless signal strength and the other gives me system controls (called System Controls v1.2) do not work. The wifi gadget displays "Disconnected" or "No Network" (different displays because I've tried multiple gadgets. The System Control v1.2 gadget has grayed out buttons and will not work.

I have Windows Vista Home Basic.
