Desktop Randomly shuts off after opening a folder

I am currently working on my friend vista laptop and for some reason whenever open up lets say for example I try opening the control panel. the desktop disappears and it closes out of the control panel. it does that for my documents too and any other folder or program for that matter. I don't know whats going on can anyone help any had this kind of problem before. The screen comes back after a while or I would have to run explorer again.
