Set File Association for DAT extension

I need some help please with Vista Home Premium. I am unable to open an image sent with a DAT file extension, and I get the msg, "This file does not have a program associated with it. . . .". I went to Control Panel Default Programs, and looked in both "Set your Default Program" choices, and "Associate a file type or protocol...", but did not find a DAT selection. Am I not able to receive DAT files in Vista?
