Freezing after login

My computer has recently started freezing after about 2 minutes of logging in, it has also gone to a black screen saying "login has failed to create security options" (or something along those lines.)
It first happened about a week ago when i left my computer on and came back to find it had frozen, and ctrl alt del doesn't even work.
I have not installed any new programmes recently either, that i can remember. Definitely nothing significant.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

have you tried doing a System Restore to a point before this started happening?
