While I don't know why they freeze up, you may try to perform a system restore
to the point prior to this occurrence. Also, when posting, try to be more descriptive. Changes like that are usually brought on by changes to the system
settings. No one but you, knows your system configuration and programs that
you ran, so it is hard to make an educated guess.

This is probably an effect of changes to system settings that you've made, knowingly or not. Try to perform a system restore to a point prior to these changes.
