Can't afford another printer. Please help!

I just recently bought a Canon Pixima MP250 scanner, copier, printer.
It refuses...flat out refuses...to print anything that isn't a Microsoft Word or Notepad or Wordpad document. I called Canon and they claim that nothing is wrong with the printer, that it's the computer. I called HP and they wanted a crazy amount of money to tell me whats wrong. And the Geek Squad said it was the printer...so I hit a dead end.

Adobe Reader spits out the error message: Before you can perform print related tasks, such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer

Microsoft Picture Viewer says: This picture can't be printed because no printer is installed or a service that Windows needs is not working

I tried running the printer troubleshooter but it can't fix the problem. I tried Microsoft's Fix It Program and it didn't work either.

I can't get the printer to set as the default printer. I don't know whats wrong with it or why it won't work but it just won't...

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
