media player audio playback

I am running vista business. My Windows Media player will not run ANY audio playback. Not from the C drive, any plug in media, or even from the internet directly. It is not a problem with my speakers. I am able to play back from other software, for example a song downloaded using Frostwire will play through the Frostwire software. If it's simply a settings issue, I cannot find where to make the correction. The Help menu provides no information on this issue.
