Need Help - Desktop not appearing
I've looked online, but I haven't found the exact problem I have.
My Vista was fine this morning. Then today I shut it down manually because it had locked up. That was about 5 hours ago. For the past couple of hours I have been starting and restarting. I start it, it takes a while, then the blue login screen comes up. I log in. It takes a while longer. Then it shows up as a black screen with a mouse. If I leave it alone for a while, the screen saver comes on. CTRL + ALT + DEL brings up that blue screen that gives you options to log off, restart, start task manager, etc. I start task manager. It does not appear.
I finally got the desktop to appear by working in Safe Mode with Networking. I am glad it is working, but in this mode there are some features I don't have and it is slower. And it says the Security Center is not working, so I hope not to be on long. Norton claims to be scanning, though. When I try to turn on the security center it won't let me, and it says the firewall is not using the correct settings. Is the Safe Mode problem? EDIT: The firewall is on, but it only came on after I updated the settings. The Security Center still won't come on. It says it can't be started.
I know you guys aren't geniuses at this, but does any of this sound familiar to you? I'm not a tech wiz and I have no idea how to fix this. Anything will help. Thanks.
