Desktop functions extremely slow when Word is running

Hi everyone,

I'm running Vista (64 bit; 4 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Processor) and I have a frustrating problem. Often, but not always, when I open Word 2003, all the desktop functions get ridiculously slow. Word is fine, but if I, say, try to maximize a window from the task bar or switch to another window, the system can take a minute or more to complete the action. If I kill Word via the task manager, the problem goes away.

If anyone has any advice or knows magic solution to this problem, I'd be grateful (getting a new OS is out of the question; I have to finish something by next week and don't have time to do install an OS between then and now).

I'm having the exact same problem. It only happens when Microsoft word is running (I have word 2007). Word works fine, really fast, but doing anything in the windows environment is extremely slow. The odd thing is, if I have another program or something open, and I switch to that, working within it (example a browser) is also very very fast, it is just the windows environment itself (taskbar, desktop, windows explorer) that slows to a complete crawl. In task manager there is almost no cpu or ram being used so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Did you manage to get it fixed? Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem?:

I still haven't been able to fix it. I have the exact same problems you described.

I discovered that if I leave Word documents open for hours and hours (can't be precise about how many), the problem seems to get better. Not exactly a great solution, and I don't know if it will work every time.

This seems like a really strange bug. I'm tempted to just reformat and reinstall everything, but I don't have the time to be re-doing my PC just now.
