No Update, No recognition and Error on Install

I am running Vista Home Ultimate on a Dell Studio 1737. I now find that when attempting to access the control panel, i get a white screen which then returns to the desktop sceen, in addition any attempt to use the Windows Update service results in a similar response. The LIve scan does not recognise my software? My main concern revolves around the fact that even when i manage to download security or other updates the install starts then stops with a variety of error codes including Access Denied(0x80070005) or 0x80070426...Any attempt to access Windows Management Instrumentation software is denied...Please help this miserable soul.
