cannot open .wmv file

Unable to open .wmv file in either iTunes or Windows Media Player. Any suggestions?

Not opening in both iTunes and Wmp leans towards a codec problem. Do you have any codec packs installed? If you do, try uninstalling. Most codec packs when uninstalling give you an option to repair. Try the repair option and see if this works for you. If not we can try something else.

What is a codec? And how do I find out if I have any installed?

A codec is what enables your player to recognise the different video and audio formats. I use vista codec pack Download Vista Codec Package 5.4.2 - With this package installed, you shouldn't need to install any other codec or filter - Softpedia
Let it install with default settings. There is no need to uninstall your current codecs. The vista codec installation wizard will do all that is required.
