No Vista Registration

Turned laptop on today, to be faced with two messages

"Vista Registration has stopped working windows is checking for a soloution and will notify you" nothing happens!

" Vista registration has stopped working problem is caused program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program"

Cant get on to the internet to try and update windoes ect, but nothing. I have got a Product Recovery disk, but dont want to loose all my stuff.

Please help
