windows can't check for updates...help!

When i start my pc i get the following message: 'windows can't check for updates'. When i click install, it fails. Any idea why this is and what i can do to rectify this?

check your antivirus and firewall settings,these sometimes block updates,also check to see if the services are running,do you have onecare or did you have onecare on your pc???

I actually removed my firewall (Outpost) a couple of weeks ago thinking this might be the reason but nothing's changed. When i followed the troubleshooting steps, Windows said their firewall allows these updates. I use AVG anti-virus but not sure what to look for. No, never had onecare.

make sure youre windows update service is running in you're services,you may need to reset these?

click- control panel>system and maintenance>adminastrative tools>services-scroll down to windows update and click once on it,in the left pane it should say either stop,restart or if it isnt turned on start,restart the sevice if it isnt turned on,there are other services which may need to be on first,make sure the RPC service is on,hope this might help

3. in command prompt type: chkdsk /r /f

---it's going to ask to run on restart say yes
4.restart (in this process it check for corrput file, security and system integrity and hopefully repairs the damage areas)
5. after system has rebooted and that process is done open control panel-admin. tools- services
6.Set the following to automatic and do not start the services.
a. windows modules installer
b. windows update
c. winHttp web proxy auto-discovery service
d. restart the system
---that should do it.

Hi. I followed your advice and set 'windows module installer' and 'winHttp web proxy auto-discovery' to auto but 'windows update' isn't there and i'm still getting 'can't check for updates'. Could this be the reason why?

do you use onecare or another antivirus,? if you use your own and have removed onecare try this http//:microsoft support/onecarecleanup tool,it worked for me,onecare didnt ininstall properly messing with firewall and backup settings,when i used this they worked again ,download and right click on it and run as adminastator,in sevices look for windows onecare,check its properties and see what dependencies it has? if sfcmws (or something like that)is there, it hasnt uninstalled properly,
