Problem with backup from D drive to new External Hard Drive

Help.......! Rather than trying to back up my D drive which is almost full now to CD roms, I bought a 1 terrabyte external hard disk to back up my files, thinking that it would have plenty of memory to back up this and any other files, 1st time I hooked it up, and tried to back up to the new F drive, got a message from VISTA that it had insufficient memory to backup the information. What can I do to make this happen? Thoroughly confused now.
