setting computer for timed backup

Do I have to leave my laptop switched on for a pre-set time backup of all my work documents? I want to save power so would prefer to keep my Sony Vaio (Vista) on Sleep. I guess I'm hoping that the computer will turn itself on automatically at the selected time.
