Help this old guy

I have a Compaq laptop with Vista and no recovery disk. My 8 yo grandson was downloading or playing a game and the screen went black. I have tried last good configuration, recovery, repair, and everything else that is available on the computer. I then tried to start in safe mode and it loads some of the drivers and then it displays please wait and that where it sets. Need someone to help this old guy
