Question about the RAM that my notebook is running on

So I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E with Windows Vista 32-bit. It came with 2GB memory installed and recently I have been considering upgrading to 3GB but when I went to check my systems specs it says that I am running on 1014MB. Can someone help me understand why I am only running on half of my installed RAM? I have read another post where someone said to go to system configuration and make sure that maximum memory is unchecked and it was. Please any help is appreciated.

Originally, vista 32-bit without SP1 won't read RAM 1GB-up ...
So, all you do is update your vista to SP1 ...
