HP Running Vista Won't Boot Up

I am running vista on a hp laptop. On startup, it would hang at the windows welcome page. It would stay here until I powered down using the power button. I did manage to get it running in safe mode. When I looked at the problem log, I saw many "sstpsvc servicehang" messages. I don't know if this is related or not. Any ideas?
