no audio output device installed

i recently downloaded a windows update, and since then cannot get any sound through my computer, all it says is no audio output device installed, ive done a few searches but have not found anything. can sombody please help??????????

You need to tell me which motherboard you are using. is the sound card inbuilt or it is expansion sound card. The simplest way to determine the motherboard will be to check the display driver under Device manager.

im sorry for the late reply, but im in thailand and and dont get very good reception where i am! i have a hp pavilion dv6000(lap top), do i have to remove the panels underneath to find the numbers your talking about as i know nothing about computers really. the sound card is builtt in i think as i haven't had to use any external products to get sound, ive had the computer about 18 mths and haven't had any problems with sound at all. i would really appreciate your help!!
