x86 to x64 key questions

I mistakenly purchased an upgrade version of the x86 home premium SP1 for my new computer. Given that returning the software is undesirable (postage and RMA fees), what are my options for getting the x64 version?

I assume that the x64 version is not on the media that I already have. If I were to borrow a copy of the x64 home premium SP1 media, will my cd-key work on it? Will I have to get the upgrade version of will my key also work on the retail version?

Just want to clarify that I am not asking about clean install vs. upgrade install. I plan to do a fresh install of the x64 version. I just need to find out if my key will work and which media I will need.
