One reason can be file indexing. Open the Control Panel and choose "indexing options" (classic view) or "System and Maintenance" then "indexing options" (from Control Panel Home) It will tell you the status of the indexing.
The options screen will allow you to "pause" indexing so that you can see it that is the reason.
