Why is Vista so slow for me?
Hey all. I signed up here to get some help with my new notebook and Vista Ultimate. So far, it hasn't been a pleasant experience, but i'm pushing on.

Basically, I have a brand new ASUS G1s 2.2Ghz Intel Core2Duo with 2Gb RAM. So, not a slow machine. I have reinstalled Vista from my manufacturer supplied restore DVD and have only Vista up and running. After several reboots (and hours) while Vista installs updates, etc, (to be expected I suppose) my new super fast notebook sits a my desktop screen CONSTANTLY hitting the hard disk. And I mean, the HDD activity light is on SOLID with only the occasional flicker.

Basically my questions are why does it do this? And how can I stop it? Most of the time it is some process called 'TrustedInstaller' which sounds ominous to begin with. But there has also been 'mcbuilder.exe', and of course some other generic processes like 'svchost.exe'.

Seriously, there is nothing on this computer that wasn't on the restore DVD and it runs like a complete pig. Performance is completely crap. For example, I can't watch a youtube video in IE7 because it keeps skipping.

I don't mind fiddling around with services and registry stuff, so if anyone has a 'howto' or website I can get info from about how to speed this thing up, I'd really appreciate it.

TIA

Remove pre-installed craplest from your system. Its usually the cause for mist Vista problems. Download & Use PC DeCrapifier .
Disable all except AV from startup. These 2 should help you.
For more try WinVistaClub : Make Vista Start, Run, Shutdown Faster !

Thanks HappyAnyK! I'll give it a shot. I've already removed most of the ASUS crap that came with the computer, except the stuff I need.

I have many suggestions for you. First uninstall all the Asus crap that came with the computer - it seems to me you have already done that. If you're wondering what svchost is, you can check out here:
Find out which services are hogging your computer’s resources | Vista Rewired

2) Your hard drive is always spinning? It could possibly be the indexing service that you may not need. To disable index do the following:

Open My Computer. Right click a drive and choose Properties. Then at the bottom where it says Index this drive for faster searching, uncheck that box.

3) Slow startup?
Disable programs from running at startup | Vista Rewired

If you have anything else, feel free to visit my site or ask me here. Good luck.

That's awesome crazlunatic! That first suggestion with the task manager is unbelievably helpful!

I'm starting to feel better about my switch to Vista now. Thanks again!
