Hello & Updates problem
Just found and joined this forum - Hi.

Error code 80070057 'Windows could not search for updates' has prevented me accessing any updates (security of otherwise) for weeks. I had hoped that SP1 with its package of previous updates would be a cure but it seems that without KB938371, only available via updates, SP1 cannot be loaded. I have tried all of the acknowledged fixes for update failure, although admittedly I can't get 'changing proxy settings' to work. Nothing else works. I've tried MS support and they don't reply. I don't really want to spend £46 talking to them. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi nmc,

welcome aboard

Have you tried this solution...

Stop the Automatic Updates service.

Delete C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Go back to Windows Update and retry the update

It has been known to work for some people,

Let us know how you get on,

regards

Steve

Hello & Updates Problems
Super quick response. Sadly I have tried that solution innumerable times. No joy I'm afraid.

Hi nmc,

what version of Vista do you have?

Can you have a look in your Windows Update Log after trying the Update and pasting the contents into a post. Hopefully this might give us some extra clues.

regards

Steve

Hi nmc,

this is excellent as it gives us something to go on.

Lets try deleting pending.xml which is in WINDOWS\WinSxS

If you cannot see it then you may have to turn on Show Hidden Files in Explorer.

then try the update again. If it fails again please resend the latest log info.

regards

Steve

Hello & Updates Problems
Sorry, pending.xml does not appear to exist. I've looked all all files in the WinSxS folder ,including hidden, and it's not there.

Hi nmc,

ok then. Next Step is to check out this Microsoft page for the WGA Diagnostics.... Genuine Microsoft Software

This will make sure that MS Update thinks that updates are "allowed" on your PC.
