Vista cannot see file on my hard drive
There is an avi file on my harddrive that software like vlc player can see and run. However if I go in through internet explorer it cannot see the file. I cannot therefore not copy or move it.

If I try and copy the file directly from VLC and paste it somewhere else Vista says the file no longer exists.

I have tried some software that undeletes files but this software does not appear to see the file either.

Any ideas?

Hi confused,

you may not be able to see certain files in Internet Explorer unless you specify *.* in the File Type option.

Try Windows Explorer instead and go to the folder where you originally saved the file. If you know the name of the file you could do a search for it, or you could search for *.avi which will search your PC for all avi files.

regards

Steve

Thanks for your reply, I have all files displayed including hidden ones.

If I search the file is not found.

It is only software like vlc player and avi fix software that can actually see it, nothing else can.

Phill

Hi Phill,

sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

When you are in your flc player where do you open the file from?

Can you copy the folder name and click on Start then run and enter the location of the folder e.g. c:\windows\temp\

Let us know how you get on,

regards

Steve

obscure fix but it works
Steve

I have no idea what Vista had done howver it just could not see the file. VLC player could and you could manage the file from VLC player.

Anyhow I deleted the file then went into Re-cycle bin and restored it.

Vista then managed to see the file and I can copy or move it anywhere I want now.

Been workinng with windows since 3.1 days and have never seen anything like this before.....
