Vista Home Prem PC can't install printers on XP machine [Resolved]
Hi, Just joined the forum. My Vista PC can see & share stuff with no problem (even on an iMAC!) When I try to install the printer (Samsunh ML-2510) that is on the XP Pro machine, Vista finds it via the add printer dialogue. It tries to install & i get the following message:" adding the printer connction failed. The local print spooler service is not running. Pleast restart....."

1. I can start the spooler(it actually restarts afer one minute if I do nothing), but the same thing happens

2. It doesn't matter whether I browse for the printer \\UPBEAST\SamsungM or type it in as a local port.

3. Other XP wireless PC's print just fine.

4. I loaded the Vista driver from Samsung (from the PC not from the Xp machine)

5. The XP machine that runs the printer has a fresh copy of XP Pro installed ( I got killed by the GoBack monster & had to reformat & re-install -- lots of fun!) The Vista PC was able to print OK before the "Crash" & reinstall".
During the "crash period I made the iMAC run the printer & the Vista machine could print through the iMAC, but then I installed Leopard & it killed the whole printer setup & I was unable to get it to work with any of the PC's -- thus decided to go back (no pun intended) to the Xp machine with the newly installed XPPro (about 1000 updates have also been installed by M-Soft).

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Carl

Hi Carl,

welcome aboard

I see there is a new Vista driver out for this printer @ SAMSUNG's Digital World - Support

It is dated 14th November 2007. The first thing to do would be to make sure you have this latest driver.

Install the driver on your Windows Vista computer. During installation, you’ll be prompted to connect the printer to your computer. Choose the option to proceed with installation without connecting the printer.

After installation completes, open the Printers applet from the Windows Vista Control Panel.

Right-click on the new Samsunh ML-2510 Series printer and choose Properties.

Go to the Ports tab.

Click Add Port…, select Local Port, then click New Port…

For the port name, enter exactly the network path and share name of your printer \\UPBEAST\SamsungM

Click OK, and double-check that this new port is selected with the checkbox next to it.

Click OK to close the printer properties

Hopefully this will do it.

regards

Steve

Steve,

Thanks. It worked. I installed the new driver & then tried to ad the port, but it was already there. So I deleted it and had to reboot. Then when I went into control panel/printers there was a new icon called SamsungM. I left clicked/properties & tried a test page -- OK, then I noticed that on a notepad file it was in the printer list window & it prints just fine.

Strange, but that's the life dealing with Windows.

Thanks again.

Carl
